Honda Motor Company recently expanded its recall for vehicles equipped with potentially defective air bags. The manufacturer is providing replacement vehicles until the repair can be completed, which could be several months due to the availability of replacement parts.
Many agents have asked questions about coverage for these long-term temporary substitute vehicles under Safeco® auto policies. In some states, Safeco’s policy language limits the amount of time a rental vehicle will qualify for comprehensive and other-than-comprehensive coverage (Coverage Part D). Safeco Insurance has decided to extend physical damage coverage to temporary substitute vehicles. This coverage extension applies to vehicles provided by Honda Motor Company to its Acura and Honda customers affected by the manufacturer’s airbag inflator recall.
